The Chartreuse de Champmol is one of most significant medieval monument in Dijon. Founded in 1383 by Philip the Bold this Carthusian monastery was built as the burial place of the Burgundian dukes and quickly became a center of artistic and religious life.
Some of the greatest artists of the late Middle Ages worked at Champmol including the celebrated sculptor Claus Sluter. His masterpiece remains one of the finest examples of Gothic sculpture and can still be admired on the site today.
Although much of the monastery was lost during the French Revolution several important buildings and sculptures have survived. These remarkable remains reflect the power and artistic vision of the Dukes of Burgundy whose patronage transformed Dijon into one of leading cultural capitals in Europe.
