The Well of Moses stands on the former grounds of the Chartreuse de Champmol in Dijon and is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval sculpture. Created by the Flemish sculptor Claus Sluter it reflects the artistic vision of the Dukes of Burgundy and remains one of most remarkable historical treasures in Dijon.
Commissioned by Philip the Bold between 1395 and 1405 the monument originally supported a monumental crucifix at the center of the Carthusian monastery. Although the upper structure has been lost the finely carved hexagonal base survives and continues to impress visitors with its exceptional detail and craftsmanship.
The sculpture depicts six Old Testament prophets : Moses, David, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel, and Zechariah. Their highly expressive faces and striking realism marked a major turning point in Gothic sculpture and deeply influenced later European art.
Today the Well of Moses stands as a powerful symbol of the artistic and religious heritage of Burgundy. Visiting it offers a rare opportunity to admire one of the finest achievements of medieval art while exploring the rich history of Dijon.
