The Hospices of Beaune

The Hospices of Beaune are one of the most remarkable historical monument in France. The monument is blending history and wine culture into a single enduring legacy. Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin the hospices were created as a hospital for the poor in the aftermath of war and plague. The project was extraordinary for the time : to provide not only care but dignity by housing patients in a place of beauty and light.

The building is renowned for its flamboyant Gothic architecture : especially its vividly colored glazed tile roofs that have become a symbol of Burgundy. Inside the vast Salle des Pôvres with its wooden beams and orderly rows of beds offers a glimpse into medieval hospital life. Artistic treasures including the famous polyptych of the Last Judgment further enrich its cultural importance.

Beyond its architectural and artistic appeal the Hospices de Beaune is deeply tied to the wine heritage of Burgundy. Over centuries donations of vineyards allowed it to build a prestigious wine estate. This legacy continues today through the annual wine auction of the Hospices : one of the most famous wine auctions in the world with proceeds supporting healthcare and preservation efforts.

Though it ceased functioning as a hospital in 1971 the Hospices de Beaune remains a powerful symbol of compassion and community. Now the Hospices invites visitors to explore centuries of history while reflecting on a mission that has endured for over five hundred years.
